Shared by Community Archive
A mild, creamy coconut fish curry with kokum or tomatoes. The gentle flavors let the fresh fish shine — a Sunday lunch staple in coastal Kerala homes.
Ingredients
- 500 g firm white fish fillets (pomfret, kingfish, or sea bass)
- 1 cup thick coconut milk
- 1/2 cup thin coconut milk
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
- 3 green chilies, slit
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 5 kokum petals (or 1 tsp vinegar)
- 10 curry leaves
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- Salt to taste
Steps
- 1 Heat coconut oil in a clay pot or pan. Sauté onion until translucent.
- 2 Add ginger-garlic paste, green chilies, and tomatoes. Cook until soft.
- 3 Add turmeric, kokum, and thin coconut milk. Bring to a gentle simmer.
- 4 Slide in the fish pieces and cook 5–7 minutes, turning once, until just opaque.
- 5 Pour in the thick coconut milk and finish with curry leaves. Don't boil after adding thick coconut milk.
- 6 Rest 5 minutes before serving with steamed rice or appam.
